You’ll be happy to know that tikitag offers a litlle extra for its application development audience. Let’s take a minute to explain
tikitag is a service that uses applications to trigger actions. So when a tag is put on the reader the service basically asks the application what to do next. The tikitag team has made several of these applications available, BUT (and this is the good news) anybody who can code can also make an application him- or herself.
tikitag provides an API for application developers interested in creating new applications or extending their current projects with tikitag functionality. The API is web services based (SOAP 1.2). So you can code in any language you prefer, as long as you use SOAP to communicate with our service you’re good.
We have a white paper available to show you how it’s done and a WSDL file to communicate with us. All you have to do is check the white paper, play by the rules and your app will be able to work with our system
How is this possible?Well, with all the buzz about our tikitag readers, you might be tempted to forget tikitag is actually a service. A service you as a developer can call upon.
So, Instead of storing all data (URLs, phone numbers, preferred songs) in the tag, tikitag's approach focuses on storing this information in an application server. When a tag is brought nearby a mobile or USB RFID/NFC reader, the reader will consult the tikitag online service (the application correlation server), and will get the right action back from the right (3rd party) application server for the right reader at the right moment.
This approach has many advantages:
1. Limited memory needed in the tag, which has a cost advantage for mass applications
2. Context based application initiation: dependent on reader, timing, user… different actions can be initiated
3. Remote update of action associated to tag: instead of needing the tag physically to update the link, the link can be updated in the network
4. Privacy: instead of storing data on the tag itself, the data is stored in the application server
5. Adding multiple applications to one tag
6. Security: overwriting the tags by non authorized users is not possible
This enables tikitag as well to extend its service to other identification technologies over time (2D barcodes…)
You do that! And you’ll probably be interested in knowing that we've set up a tikitag Google group where you can find all necessary information and share your knowledge with the community. We’ll see you at http://groups.google.com/group/tikitag
---------It’s OK to stop reading here if you’re convinced------------------- otherwise go on…
So why would I be interested?First of all because you can create stuff that other (less savvy than you, you rocket scientist meets brain surgeon you) people can use. AND for the more entrepreneurial of you we are planning on launching some ways to actually turn your bright ideas into business. We can’t tell you too much about this now, but let’s just drop “revenue sharing” as a term. Dollar signs in your eyes yet? ☺
